When the door opened, Marcus grabbed at his thrower’s grip out of reflex. The doors parted to reveal three Alters in what looked like a militia cut jumpsuit, their hands holding stun batons.

“Peace,” Ged hissed in Marcus’ head before he spoke to the Alters with his voxbox. “My friends, please. No need for violence.”

The three Alters closed their eyes for a second, then their arms fell to their side and smiled at Ged and Marcus. One of them, in a sluggish voice said, “We do need to take you to—”

“To our ship, yes,” Ged said. “Thank you for the escort,” Ged said.

One of them, a lanky lizard Alter said, “I thought we needed to detain—"

“No, no, you are taking me to my friend’s ship,” Ged said. “You are escorting me since the higher ups don’t trust me. Remember?”

“You’re right,” the leader of the three, a bull Alter that snorted and thumped the lizard’s shoulder with a laugh. “No need to get to worried. The Abomination is going to come along quietly and leave us in peace, for once.”

“That’s good,” the other two Alter guards said almost in unison.

Marcus said nothing and let two of the guards flank them and the bull lead them through the main thoroughfare of the main ring, towards the docks. H cut a quick look at Ged and filed the question away for later about what the three were talking about. Marcus was feeling a bit more relaxed as they closed in on the dock section of Arliss Colony when he saw ten men in the white and grey uniform of the MDF starting to move through the people, chcking IDs, and not very friendly.

“Ged, we have to make a break for it,” Marcus sent to Ged, hating the fact he had to do it.

“Why?”

He saw how the group moved and knew what they were. And, who they really worked for. “They are trained. They aren’t your normal MDF scrubs. It’s a ghost squad,” he sent to Ged.

One of the MDF soldiers spotted the small group of Alter guards, and Ged, calling out, “Stop, right there.”

The bull Alter turned and said, “There is no need. We are—”

The MDF solider strode towards them, another right behind him. “No, they are prisoners MDF, as of now.”

“The MDF has no jurisdiction here,” the bull Alter said, his hand going for the stun baton.

“Ged,” Marcus grunted, pulling at the Spider’s arm. “We need—”

Several things happened. The MDF soldier calmly drew his pulse thrower and astonishing speed, putingt a pulse round into the bull Alter’s chest and sent the Alter flailing backwards. Meanwhile the soldier’s companion turned to fire on both lizard Alter, who tried to pull their own weapon, far too late. Marcus pulled his own thrower and aimed it at the first soldier, and Ged reached out with his hands towards the soldier that Marcus focused on.

“You don’t need—”

The solider wheeled on Ged, his rifle pointing upwards. “Stinking Snowbird tricks ain’t working on me,” he said through gritted teeth.
